2.8" TFT Screen

Post by zal » Wed Jun 19, 2019 5:05 pm

Hello,

I would like to use a TFT screen with a Controllino Mega. I have an "Elegoo Arduino 2.8'' TFT Touch Screen" which I have used with an Arduino mega before. I tested the screen using the "graphics test" example 3 from https://www.elegoo.com/download/. It works with the Arduino, properly displaying the test patterns, but when I connect the screen to the Controllino using the 5V pin headers the screen lights up white but no patterns are displayed. The output to the serial monitor looks about the same as when the screen is connected to the Arduino Mega and the test patterns are displaying properly, but no patterns appear on the screen. (The screen is wired to the 5V pin headers on the Controllino following the Mega PINOUT V1.1 indications for the corresponding Arduino mega board pins shown in blue on the diagram: LCD_RD to A0, LCD_WR to A1, LCD_RS to A2, LCD_CS to A3, LCD_RST to A4, LCD_02 to 2, LCD_03 to 3, LCD_04 to 4, LCD_05 to 5, LCD_06 to 6, LCD_07 to 7, LCD_D0 to 8 and LCD_DI to 9. I also used the pin headers to supply 5 V and connect to GND).

I would greatly appreciate any assistance in figuring out if I can make the screen work with the Controllino Mega,

Hello,

I have checked the datasheet of the Elegoo Arduino 2.8'' TFT Touch Screen and your pinout and I do not see any reason why it should not work. Maybe you can share with us a photo of your setup?

Thanks,
Lukas

Hello Lukas,

Thank you for looking into this.

Here are some pictures of the set up:

Hello zal,

thank you for the photos. You have really nice screw terminals for the flat cables :)

Again - I have checked your setup and do not see any obvious reason why it should not work.

Do you have any idea how fast is the communication with the display?

Please note that there are some protection serial resistors on the pin header lines which may slow down edges of the very fast signals. Do you have any chance to check it with oscilloscope?

Even that according the datasheet the display should take max 120 mA, mabybe the 5V at the pinheader is overloaded - please, try to supply it externally - at least as part of the investigation.

Thanks,
Lukas

Hello Lukas,

Thank you for helping with this.

I tried using a separate 5V supply for the screen, but the result was the same (the screen lit up white and the output to the serial monitor looked normal, but no test patterns were displayed). I don't have an oscilloscope and have no idea how fast the communication is with the display. I have been using Cayenne to plot and save the data online, which seems to work well and takes the place of the screen and SD card for now.

Do you happen to know of a screen and SD card you have used with the Controllino in the past that has worked?

Thank you!

Zoe
